Where to Save Money on Books

We live in a modern age of cell phones, the internet, and digital technology. This has greatly affected the way we consume information, and books are no exception. Given all the advances in technology, what are the best ways to purchase books?

Here are the book-buying ways I consider the best:

  1. Get an eReader and buy ebooks.
This is friendly for the environment, and as an added benefit, ebooks generally cost a lot less than regular books. The downside is that not all of us are used to reading on a screen, and it can take some time to get used to using eReaders.

  2. Buy used books.
This too is environmentally friendly, and if you go to places like Half Price Books, you can expect to pay less than 50% of the retail price. Many used books (especially hardcovers) are in surprisingly good condition.

The worst book-buying habits in my opinion are:

  1. Buying physical books new.
You pay more, and ecologically, this option is not a good choice since it uses paper and if you order online, you also leave a carbon footprint for having the books delivered to you. The only justification for buying books this way is if you have trouble reading off an eReader, and you want to buy a book that just came out (and hence you cannot buy used).

As more technologies develop, perhaps there will be an increasing number of ways for us to consume books. But for the time being, I find that using eReaders and buying used books are the best methods to save money.

Ways to Maintain Good Eyesight for Readers

If you are an avid reader, you are susceptible to things like eye strain and other vision problems. For this reason, it is very important for readers to be aware of different ways to maintain good eyesight. Here are 5 things you should be doing to ensure optimal eye health.

Wear Sunglasses
UV rays can be harmful to your eyes over the long term and lead to conditions like cataracts. The best protection is a good pair of sunglasses. This is especially important if you live in an area such as Arizona, where there is a lot of sunshine. Some types of contact lenses also offer a bit of protection, but it's best to use sunglasses even if you wear contacts.

Eat Healthy
Eye health is connected to your diet, so make sure you get lots of green, leafy vegetables. Eggs, fish, and fruit also contain nutrients that help maintain eye health. If eating healthy is not always possible, consider taking a supplement that contains omega 3, Vitamin C and E, zinc, and lutein.

Stop Smoking
Smoking can contribute to many eye problems, including cataracts, optic nerve damage, and macular degeneration. Quitting smoking is therefore essential to having good eye health. If you have been unsuccessful in your previous attempts to quit smoking, consider switching to e-cigarettes.

Get Eye Exams Routinely
Even if you have no issues with your vision, you should be getting regular eye exams to make sure there is nothing wrong with your eyes. Getting an eye exam could detect potential problems like Glaucoma early on, when such conditions will be easier to treat. And if you need reading glasses, eyeglasses, or contact lenses, an optometrist will be able to write you a prescription. If you do end up needing corrective lenses and opt to wear contacts, consider buying them online. I buy my contact lenses online because I can get great deals at Lens.com. And by using Lens.com coupon codes, I usually get a pretty large discount on my orders.

Follow Precautions with Computers

If you use a computer at home or for work, be aware that this can cause eye strain, dry eyes, blurry vision, and other potential problems. To help prevent problems, make sure your monitor is at eye-level, use an anti-glare screen if the glare bothers you, and give your eyes a rest every 20 minutes by looking away at something at a good distance for 20 seconds.

The Many Uses of Bitcoin

As you may have heard, a cryptocurrency (aka digital currency) called Bitcoin has really taken the world by storm. At first it was just thought of as an experiment, but over the years, adoption of Bitcoin has skyrocketted. Today, it is viewed by many as a legitimate currency, and quite a few alternative coines (mostly imitations of Bitcoin) have emerged as well. But those who are new to Bitcoin may wonder just how much use it can have for them. I will attempt to answer this question in this article.

bitcoin

1) Bitcoin as a currency.
The first, most obvious use of Bitcoin is as a currency. Many people don't trust government-issued currencies and prefer to use Bitcoin for philosophical reasons, such as being a libertarian. If you fall into this category, using Bitcoin can have a good amount of appeal. In the past, using Bitcoin was not easy, but today, many websites accept Bitcoin. Depending on where you live, you may even find local businesses such as cafes and sandwich shops that accept Bitcoin. It's important to note the Bitcoin is also accepted by online casinos. This is especially helpful to some because traditionally, credit card companies have refused to accept transactions for online casinos, making it difficult for many people to fund their online casino accounts. For a list of casinos that accept bitcoin, head over to http://www.bitcoinvideogame.com/casino-slots.htm.

2) Bitcoin as an investment.

Many people simply buy Bitcoin in the hopes the value of the currency will rise. Some people have made quite a bit of money investing in Bitcoin, and it is therefore a possible way to make a lot of money. But anyone who invests in Bitcoin needs to understand that this type of investment is very speculative and risky. For this reason, you should only invest money that you can afford to lose.

3) Bitcoin as a business.
Finally, Bitcoin and its related technologies have been responsible for over 100 startup companies. Bitcoin has therefore been good for business. Among the businesses Bitcoin have spurned are mining businesses, Bitcoin exchange businesses, and businesses that leverage the technology used by Bitcoin, which is called Blockchain technology.

Therefore, while Bitcoin, at its core, is a digital currency, it has plenty of other applications and uses. As with all new technologies Bitcoin has had a ripple effect that has affected multiple industries.

Starting a Small Business

Many people dream of owning their own business but aren't quite sure how to start. In this article, I will go over some of the basic steps required for starting a business.

small businessFirst, you need to decide what type of entity you want to use to run your business. Most commonly, people would run their business as a sole proprietorship. This requires no setup on your part other than opening up a checking account. On the other hand, if you want to have more limited liability, forming a corporation is the better choice. There are many types of corporations you can create, including LLCs, S corporations, and C corporations. The main issue of creating a corporation, however, is that you need to file papers with the state, and this usually requires help from a lawyer. A savvy business person, however, can create corporations on their own if they use resources such as the ones available at Nolo.com. Note that corporations are taxed differently from sole proprietorships, so it is in your best interest to educate yourself about this.

Once you have decided on the type of business you will run, you must next open a business checking account. Most banks will require your articles of incorporation and other supporting documents to open up a business checking account. If you are a sole proprietor and want to do business under a business name, you will need to file forms at a local newspaper advertising your DBA. The bank will require proof of this before allowing you to open an account under a different name. Either way, the banking officer should be able to guide you through the process of opening up an account. If your business uses a lot of checks, you may want to consider ordering laser checks from a checking company such as Deluxe Checks Corporation. This will allow you to print checks on your own, and the checks will be compatible with your accounting program, making it much easier to issue checks. You can purchase laser checks using Deluxe coupons by going to http://freebiebulletin.com/coupons/deluxe-discount-code.php.

Now you are ready to open your business. A few other things you should consider doing is creating a logo and establishing a website. There are many resources that will allow you to do both things online at a relatively affordable price.

Advertising Your Business Through Packaging

In my last article, I discussed some tips for small businesses. At the end of the article, I emphasized the importance of creating a logo and website to help establish an identity. Businesses call this branding, and it's a very important component of marketing strategy. In this article, I'd like to expand on the idea and talk about how you should incorporate branding into all aspects of your business.

business branding

Assuming you have managed to obtain an eye-catching, memorable logo, the next step is to make sure it gets exposure. This means putting your logo on business cards and your website. Many cheaper business cards do not display logo or artwork, but do not get such plain business cards. For a bit of extra money, you can usually find a good Internet printing service such as Vistaprint that can incorporate your logo onto your business card.

But it doesn't have to stop there. The other area where branding opportunities are numerous is with packaging. Does your business make deliveries? Or do you sell things at a retail store? If so, the boxes and bags you use are a terrific place to put your company name and logo, further branding your business. You already see supermarkets, department stores, and other stores doing this, and they wouldn't go through the trouble unless branding works. So if you can afford it, your business should be doing the same.

The next question you're probably asking yourself is, where can I go to purchase boxes or bags that will have my logo? The best company I've found to date is Bags & Bows, and if you visit their site, you will see that they offers hundreds of bags and boxes for almost every occasion. They also allow you to customize each product, and that is the option you want to select if you want to buy bags or boxes with your logo on them. You'll need to upload your logo through the website. Once you do, you should be able to see a preview of what the end product will look like. To ensure that your order turns out the way you want, you will also get your own consultant who will help you through the process. While custom orders do cost more, you can usually get a good deal by using a Bags & Bows coupon to receive an extra discount. Once you use Bags & Bows, I think you'll realize what an easy company they are to work with, and continue to use them in the future for any packaging needs your business has.
